Bay of Plenty is on the upper east coast of New Zealand and is known for its volcanic landscape, gorgeous beaches, lakes and Maori villages. Discovered by Captain James Cook in the 18th-century, the Bay of Plenty owes its name to the abundant natural resources found in this region. Rotorua is famed for its geysers and thermal mud pools fueled by the geothermal activity in the area. Visit the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute to watch time-honoured traditions such as wood, bone and stone carving, along with maori flax weaving being taught to the next generation.
Get your tramping boots on and explore historic Mt Tarawera which erupted in 1886 causing massive destruction to maori villages and beyond. In contrast to a dead volcano, take a helicopter flight to White Island and brace yourself for a once in a lifetime experience exploring the scary terrain of the Bay of Plenty's most active volcano.
You are spoilt for choice of beaches in the Bay of Plenty. Be sure to visit Mt Maunganui where you can enjoy its sparkling white sands or take the climb up the Mount to enjoy spectacular views. For a unique experience, take your spade to Hot Water Beach, 35km south of Whitianga, dig yourself a large hole and soak in hot thermal water, then cool off in the refreshing ocean.
