Famously known as The Garden City, Christchurch is also a city where the past and present combine in architecture. This makes for a city of things always happening, from the trendy dining and drinking Salt District, to the celebration of the arts at the Christchurch Art Gallery, and the theatre at the Isaac Theatre Royal.
This is a city of great strength and character, of community and redevelopment after the devastating 2011 earthquake. There are parks for running and walking (dogs love the open spaces), and much to do away from the city such as visiting Akaroa and Banks Peninsula.

Kia Ora, My name is Marama Mitchell and my Partner is Jack Baigent. We have two children, Tui is 9 years old and Kahu is 7 years old. I am a physiotherapist who works in private practice and Jack is the regional coordinator for Parent2Parent. We all live in Tawa, Wellington. Jack, myself and the kids all love the outdoors, going for walks, parks and the beach. We enjoy exercising so walking a dog would not feel like a chore but something to look forward to with the extra company of your pet. We have also looked after a variety of animals at Tui's Montessori pre-school as well as a couple of house sits now with dogs and cats. During our time living and studying in Auckland we used to house sit for a family friend who lived in Herne Bay. This included looking after their dog Cappuccino. We loved it! We lived in a small apartment in the city, so it felt like such a treat staying in a Herne Bay house with a dog. We have never forgotten how special it was to look after someones home and pet and had the opportunity to explore a new area of Auckland. Newly retired Grew up on a farm so was used to (3)dogs from a very young age and we had a cat too. We had 150 cows a few sheep and 40 odd chocks as well. My grandmother supplied the local shop and she also keeps bees! My main interests are modern history and modern architecture and vintage engineering (cars aircraft trains and radios). Sold house in Takapuna and given away almost all my possessions. Intend to travel for the next 8 or 9 years including spending time with my wife in Melbourne. Just spending this summer 2025 here and looking at travelling in NZ, staying in campgrounds etc in my old Toyota. Have house sat for friends and relatives in the past. Looked after my cousins house in England in 2024 for a month while he was in NZ. I was a landlord for 20 years so know how to take care of other peoples houses. When children were young had cats, fish, birds and lots of plants Also have experience with rabbits and with dogs. Would prefer a longer sit and I am very flexible with location. I've recently sold my house in Christchurch (April 2026) and I'm interested in exploring house sittings options before I get back into the housing market. I'm a business owner and although we've survived the recession, the business has not thrived. We're solvent and profitable and will remain that way. House sitting is an attractive option as it will allow me to build up business and personal capital. I'm treasurer of a cricket club and have been on the committee for over 20 years. About us: David spent much of his early years on a farm in Matamata, before moving with his family to Auckland. He has worked for Air New Zealand, and its predecessor NAC, for many years as an airline pilot, both short and long haul and is now retired. We usually stay in air bnbs, but house sitting would help us out immensely. We are home owners in Wanganui and we have also extensively used air bnbs to take our girls on mini breaks away. All our reviews from staying in different homes have been A+. We also personally keep a very tidy, organised, clean home in Wanganui. Although we don't own a lot of pets (currently one cat), we love animals and plan to one day foster or rescue a dog! We are very caring by nature and very frequently visit friends farms in Wanganui who have a wide range of pets/farm animals which our girls love to experience. Sometimes myself and the girls would house sit, other times my husband would also join us (depending when the visiting falls in the calendar as my husband is a full time builder so can't always join us on school holidays). Homeowners can expect honest, reliable, communicative, kind sitters from the Singleton family. Our girls are also very respectful and tidy and absolutely love nothing more than 'playing house' when we go on holiday. I believe this would be replicated if we were to house sit. We are a recently retired couple who enjoy seeing different parts of New Zealand. House sitting would enable us to experience being part of the community and seeing more of the real New Zealand (instead of staying in anonymous Motels). We have had many adventures including walking the backcountry several times, but with age feel it's time to hang up the tramping boots and concentrate on more urban areas. Now we have a classic car and enjoy driving with other enthusiasts exploring some back roads on rallies and displaying the vehicle at car shows. We don't have a pet of our own as it would be unfair to leave them at home alone while we travel and so get our fix interacting with other peoples pets. In the past we have experienced house sitting, mostly friends or friends of friends, who have precious fur babies who they couldn't bear to put into kennels/catteries due to an earlier bad experience or being elderly and needing extra care. Being house owners ourselves we understand the need to keep the house and section to the same standard as it was left. We are both physically fit and have no problem if your dog loves long walks.

I am a very fit and active retiree. I left the workforce eight years ago to travel to various parts of the world, including some of NZ which I hadn’t yet been to. I have been involved in sport all my life and interested in organics and sustainabilities for many years, so decided to become a Woofer (Willing Worker On Organic Farms). I have thoroughly enjoyed all my placements in NZ, Australia, USA and Portugal. I have visited places and met people that I would never had the chance as a tourist and learnt about growing fruits, vegetables and raising animals in an totally organic and sustainable manner. I have looked after many animals and learnt how to give back to the land for future harvests. Six years ago in 2018 I bought a lifestyle property in the Far North, so have not been able to travel as much, or house sit as I used to, while working hard on my land. Now however I have more spare time, & look forward to being able to travel in NZ. I currently work on my orchard of 100+ trees of every description imaginable, & 4 large vegetable plots. I farm totally organically, eat in season, & am self sufficient(++) with fruit, vegetables & eggs from my 5 chickens. I am able to swap my excesses for milk, meat, cheese & bread! I feel very fortunate. I also have extra acreage which I use for growing grass, (local farmer makes hay in summer). I have also done two caminos (long walks) in both France, and Portugal into Spain. These were 750 and 700km respectively, in 2014 & 2017. My most recent was from Lisbon, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. I have been a proud homeowner since 1980. As a house sitter, you will have someone with old fashion values of care & respect for your property, a good work ethic, totally reliable & honest. As for pets, when my children were growing up, we had a Staffordshire bull terrier, rabbits, cats, cockatiel and baby goats. Currently I have 5 chickens. While woofing I have looked after lots of dogs, cats, goats (learnt to milk), chickens, ducks, pigs, cows, and loved all those times. My woofing hosts would sometimes leave me to house sit at weekends, or in one case, for 10 days when an unavoidable event happened. On that occasion I looked after a small farmlet of goats, cows chickens, vegetable garden, orchard....the entire property. I loved the challenge and was totally equal to the task of overall management. I love outdoors work. Obviously I enjoy walking, so dogs love me for their twice daily long walks. My house-sitting experience was for 5 weeks for an acquaintance around 2 years ago (she had no pets) but I am a pet-lover - growing up we had cats and I loved visiting our grandparents every weekend to play with their dogs (fox terriers)! Since then we've had a boxer named Varec and cats named Ash and Graham. I'm very security conscious as well as being respectful of others and their property. I've been lucky enough to have owned/co-owned a home for many years so I'm well aware of how protective people are of theirs. I also believe in the importance of communication and I understand that pet and property owners may/will want frequent advice as to how things are progressing. Regular tramping/hiking enables me to keep fit (up to Everest Base Camp in Nepal around 15 years ago has been my my most challenging tramping experience) while reading and movies are my other main interests.... being retired provides me the luxury of indulging in these activities. Dog owners we occasionally meet when tramping will confirm that I can't resist stopping to engage with their pets if the pet is accepting. Friends I've stayed with here in Auckland will confirm that their cats remember me and want to make contact when I visit. I've travelled overseas quite a lot and have lived in the UK, Belgium and Greece. While not the same, I've had very happy times looking after great nieces and nephews and they have really enjoyed our adventures too.

As a teenager I was a foreign exchange student, and as a college student I resided in girls residencies, so I could say I've had practice in terms of following people's household rules. It's not a problem for me to adjust to the needs a family, house and pets might have under my watch. I have no doubt I could care for your home as if it were my own with the gratitude of being able to reside in it. I'm extremely clean and organized, and make the place around me to fit that criteria. You can count on having your house cared after as if you would be there. When it comes to pets, I'm a pet lover, I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, and I've been through many situations with them, including hospitalization and short term treatment medication, so I consider myself to be able to respond correctly in case of emergency, I'm knowledgable in dog behaviors and could catch anything out of the ordinary and report it to you for your peace of mind. My dogs are under an organic meal routine so I meal prep for them, and walk them 60 to 90 minutes per day, so I'm use to following a routine for them. Cats on the other hand are more independent so they just play in our backyard or sleep. I've had pets since I was a child so I feel it just comes natural to me to care for them. I think of my pet as my own children therefore the love and respect I have for them is as if they were human beings. You can be certain that your pets will be taken care of with love and respect. I'm currently housesitting my sister's house and her dog Leon, a 4-year old moodle. Among other experiences: In march I housesat my sister’s friend house in the Gold Coast for a week, caring for the house and her dog Cruiser, a 7-years old American bully. I have housesat my uncle's house two summers when he would go on vacation, caring for the house and Chuni and Chunita, his 2 pitbulls. I have also housesat my former in-laws house and their dog, 2 summers ago, Neri a 4 year-old Schnautzer, and Charlie a 2 year-old dachshund. I have never cared for somebody else's cat but I'm confident that nothing should go wrong, cats usually like me and cuddle with me whenever I'm at cat owner's houses. I find it to be extremely beneficial for me to be surrounded by pets, so I enjoy spending quality time with them. I work remotely so I spend most of the day at home when traveling.

Hi our names are Maryna and Neil, We are a retired couple and feel it is our time to discover the rest of New Zealand and while doing that, do what we enjoy and that is looking after peoples pets and a little gardening while we at it. We immigrated here 18 years ago and have been living in the Catlins ever since so love to explore . As we do not have animals of our own (not by choice) this will also give us a great opportunity to enjoy other people's pets while we are on breaks. We are reliable and trustworthy and are managing a holiday park in the Catlins. This is a 24/7 entity and being in hospitality means we know what is expected from cleanliness and client communication. Neil is a handyman and extremely keen garderner so finds himself very busy most of the time. We both are pet lovers and with previous housesitting experience in London, South Africa and in the Catlins, we have done a lot of dog walking, cuddling cats and even looked after pigs, horses and chickens. We both love fishing and used to take our doggies with us (back in South Africa) so they could have a good run around, and when given the chance they would steal some of our catch! It would be our privilege to help home owners out by looking after their homes and taking care of their pets ( with lots of love) putting their minds at ease. My aim is to enjoy my retirement by experiencing new places and meeting new people. House sitting is a wonderful way to achieve the above in a win-win situation. I love the animals and the outdoors. I am a retired GP and I know how precious life is. I used to have cats and dogs and a couple of turtles when I was younger and I loved them dearly. I remember a pair of Doberman puppies, Linda and Max. I "saved" them from their mother who had too many babies to be able to feed them properly. They were 5 days old and I bottle fed them and looked after them until they were 4-5 months old. Linda went to another owner and I wanted to keep Max, but alas, one day he disappeared from my parents' well fenced garden. Then I had Jimmy (it was during Jimmy Carter's time). I found him on the street. He was a naughty boy and used to ruin everything around the house including our neighbors' washings and other belongings. He was adopted by a family who lived in the country side. A cat I found on the steps in front of my apartment, a couple of turtles that grew up nicely in our flat. When I bought a village house with a big garden about 4 years ago, it came with Athos, a Romanian shepherd dog who had established his headquarters on this property. Nobody knew exactly how old he was. They only knew that he was left behind by his flock more than 16 years ago (see photo). And now a bit more about myself as your house sitter. I will keep your house tidy and clean, I like to be punctual and keep my word, I am open and friendly. Other hobbies that I might entertain while house sitting beside looking after your pets could be reading, handcraft, learning Japanese, walking and gardening as needed. In the past we have owned a small lifestyle block on which we ran dry stock, raised calves, tendered to our chickens. Our black Labrador, Luke enjoyed farm life along with his pal Smoky our cat which out lived him by reaching the grand age of 18. Presently we are pet free due to a clause we have in a crosslease agreement forbidding animals. Hello, we are Julie and Colin Brown. We retired to Manapouri. Fiordland three years ago. Prior to that we lived in Invercargill, when looking at retirement we decided to upgrade our family crib (bach) and move to live near our much loved Lake Manapouri. We have some spare time on our hands and decided that house sitting would be a way to get out and see more of New Zealand, to meet new people, new pets, see new places and make the most of our retirement. We had to say goodbye to our much loved 18 year old cat Connor a few months before we moved to Manapouri, so that was very sad. We have inherited quite a number of cats over the years, usually arriving at our home via the children and then we were left in charge. Colin has a bit of an affinity with birds, me not so much, although according to my mother our farm hens always loved me and followed me around.. We enjoy the company of dogs (nothing like a nice chat to a dog) and we both enjoy walking. We no longer have our own pet, but by looking after yours we still get to have that animal contact. Our animals of choice would be cats or dogs. We both enjoy being outdoors and Colin has a great vegetable garden and tunnel house. My garden these days is much smaller than it used to be but I still love getting out and poking around in it. We also both make use of the biking and walking trails in our area. and hope this summer we will get to make more use of the lake and get out to do some fishing. Colin is a keen whitebaiter, so definitely no house sitting for us in September or October (unless you have a stand nearby) that he can use. We would look after your home and animals as if they and it were our own. Neither of us have ever smoked, we do both socially drink wine or beer but otherwise feel we have no vices. We are clean, tidy, respectful and responsible. We would hope that you could feel secure to comfortably leave us to care for your animals and home.

We lived and worked in Christchurch for 22 years, then moved to Papamoa 11 years ago. Allan's parents were dairy farmers, and he loved farm life. He is an enthusiastic golfer and gardener, a Justice of the Peace, and volunteers for the Papamoa Community patrol. We are genuine animal lovers and have had our own pets, mostly rescue dogs, for all of that time. Also, as our sons were growing up - a cockatiel, a black-hooded rat, and 2 goldfish! We have also looked after a neighbour's diabetic cat when they were frequently away, including giving daily insulin injections and special diabetic food requirements. After our last elderly dog passed away 8 years ago, we really missed having a dog in our home, so became approved volunteer puppy boarders for Blind/Low Vision puppies, and have really enjoyed providing this service. As we have friends and family in Christchurch and various parts of the North Island, we would love to house sit when we travel to those areas, as well as when we explore new areas that we haven't yet been to. We really hope that you will contact us so that we can look after your home as though it were our own and give your pets the best possible TLC. Growing up, my family had a Samoyed dog and two cats. My father was also the local dog walker and I often walked the dogs as well. With the goal of one day retiring outside of Auckland I would love an opportunity to look after someone else’s home and animals and explore other parts of the country. I am in my happy place with animals and nature and I am very fit, energetic and reliable. I enjoy road cycling, walking, yoga and swimming. My day typically starts at 5.30 am with a walk before work and finishes with another walk and sometimes yoga. At weekends, I cycle regularly 50 -70 kms for leisure. My other interests are vegetable gardening, reading and cooking. Describe yourself and your reason for house sitting We’re Peter and Karen — a responsible, friendly, and professional couple who have lived overseas for the past 30 years. We returned to New Zealand permanently in late November to be closer to our family. While we awaited the arrival of our shipment we took the opportunity to travel a little and explore different parts of the country, and do some pet sitting. We have settled in Christchurch until early 2027, but we are still keen to do some more pet sitting over the winter months. We are positive outgoing people. We understand the necessity to have people to look after your house and look after your pets because we travel ourselves and employ housesitters. Our experience with looking after pets is owning cats, dogs and fish and having housesitters to care for them when we go away. Homeowners will find that we respect their property and their gardens and pets are well cared for. David is a retired Quality and Safety Engineer from Airbus. Margaret is recently retired from Administration. David is an avid DIYer and keen sportsman, having previously played, coached and refereed Rugby, run half-marathons and dragon boat national champion. We now enjoy walking and hiking together. Margaret is a previous piano teacher and now enjoys quilting and playing Bridge. This December I’ll be competing at the Olympic Qualification Event in Kelowna, and in April I’ll head to Switzerland for the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships. We are a responsible, long term, married, retired couple. With more free time at our disposal house sitting becomes an attractive way to be useful to others as well as offering new experiences for us. We have travelled internationally for both business and family overseas, as well as extensively throughout New Zealand, and having lived long spells in Wellington, Auckland and now retired to Bay of Plenty. With the family overseas, often our time away has been for up to 3 months, and on those occasions we have had friends and others staying at our home. We know what it is like to make your home available to others who you are familiar with and some who you are not but still have that small apprehension about whether it will be ok. We know how you are feeling making this commitment. We have been long term dog and cat owners, and currently regularly play house parents to a friend's dog. Walking and appropriate exercise is not a problem. Other friends also call on us to house sit and mind their precious moggy, often for longer periods. With golf being a sport that we both enjoy, the opportunity to play courses in your region is an added appeal for house sitting. but also assures you that we are fit and able to walk as far as your pets need. Choosing us to look after your house and pets will give maximum assurance that all will be well cared for, and treated as if they were our own. Go on your holiday and relax and enjoy in the knowledge that everything at home is being well cared for. When we sit for you, your home and pets are our primary concern. We travel specifically for your sit, and make any of our other arrangements fit around the primary focus, which is you. We like to make plans in advance, often months ahead, we only travel by car not campervan, our planning giving you surety of a great sitter and also the knowledge that your sit is sorted. This allows you to focus on all the other good things about going on holiday, and us to sit for other owners as schedules allow.

I was born in Christchurch. I lived 26 yrs in NZ and now 40+ in California. I go home to NZ once or twice a year. I have just said goodby to my 15 year old Mini Pinscher that I rescued at 1yr old. He was very active and we walked twice a day. I volunteered for the Golden Retriever rescue for 6 years interviewing adopters, walking the goldens, and picking up very frightened golden's from shelters to bring into our rescue. I have always had a cat, the biggest love of them was 19 when he passed on. I have a 5 yr old rescue black cat. I also grew up with chooks. I am a competent horse rider and will consider looking after most animals. Would love to throw on my gum boots and head out to the paddock to cover a horse or move an animal to another paddock. I am a Scottish country dancer and like to walk, garden, read and knit. I am willing to go anywhere in NZ and would prefer a rural setting. I am looking forward to my next trip to be a Kiwi for a few months this year from early Sept 2025 - Jan 2026.
