Kawerau is a key town in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, and has the magnificent Putauaki (Mount Edgecumbe) dormant volcanic cone behind it. You can apply for a permit to climb the mountain, with access permits to climb Mt Putauaki available from Maori Investments. Kawerau is well placed for travelling to Rotorua and Whakatane, and a great location for people wanting to go hiking and cycling, or who prefer an easy stroll on the tree-lined streets.
