Timaru is a great place to live and stay, with a beach, gardens, cafes and the excellent location of being halfway between Christchurch and Dunedin. Canterbury’s second largest city has historical architecture that adds to its character, and which visitors to the popular Caroline Bay Carnival get to marvel at every summer. If you’re keen for some exercise outside, then walking or mountain biking in Centennial Park is one of the options. Another outdoor option for families is the beach, with Caroline Bay being first choice for many, and described as one of the beast beaches in New Zealand. If you would like a break from the beach, then Timaru Botanic Gardens is an option, as is the South Canterbury Museum, where you can find out more about the heritage of Timaru and the local area.
